With more and more Internet attention being directed at wellness and self care in recent months, I thought it would be a good time to share my tips on how to incorporate skincare into a night-time routine that will not only benefit your skin, but also your mental health.
Anyone that knows me in person and knows what I do for a living will appreciate that I know a thing or two about wellbeing and managing anxiety or insomnia. For those of you that don’t – please trust me on this one. I know what I’m doing lol.

I’m hoping that through this post I can help you see that beauty and skincare doesn’t have to be a bad guy when it comes to mental health, like a lot of the media out there might want us to think. Incorporating the steps I’m about to share into your evening routine once or twice a week can really benefit your mental wellbeing by reducing anxiety, helping improve sleep quality and benefitting your skin as well, helping you feel more confident. So keep reading if you want to find out more!
What you will need for this routine is something like the ESPA Ultimate Sleep Collection set which I got for only £35 (!!!) on Look Fantastic last week – this has since sold out but you can find a similar gift set here for an equally affordable price. The set contains a bath oil, body oil, silk sleep mask, a regenerating serum and my all time favourite overnight hydration mask. The reason this set is so good is because it contains absolutely everything you need. So if you don’t have alternatives you could use, this is a good starting kit. The set I linked contains exactly the same items except for the silk eye mask.
The first step to this routine is either a bath using the bath oil, or a shower – whichever you prefer. I personally don’t like baths too much so I will use the bath oil over my neck, shoulders and lower back and give myself a short massage in those tension areas before jumping in the shower. The oil helps with the massage, and it also smells great so it starts the relaxation process gently.
Afterwards, you want to use the body oil to hydrate your skin after your wash. This will smell the same as the bath oil, and again it uses essential oils that aid relaxation and encourage sleep. Take a few deep breaths while you do this to allow your mind to clear and focus on the experience.
With this routine, it’s important to be mindful throughout. If you’re not familiar with mindfulness, put simply, it’s a form of meditation that is widely used in the treatment of all types of mental illness or disorder as it’s been proven to be incredible in helping manage symptoms such as anxiety, racing thoughts, low mood, poor sleep, the list goes on. If you’d like a more detailed post about mindfulness and how to practice it please let me know in the comments section. But in short, you want to “live in the moment” and focus entirely on the experience of your senses during what you’re doing e.g. breathe deeply and focus on the smell of the oils, the physical sensation of it on your skin, any sounds associated with it etc.
The mindful application of the products is the part that actually benefits the mind, and ESPA know this because all their products smells so good – they’re made to be enjoyed by more than just your skin.
After you’ve hydrated your body, you want to move on to your face and use a few drops of the serum mixed in with the overnight hydration therapy. I absolutely adore the smell of these two so I normally take some big breaths doing this to really enjoy that part. Apply the mixture to your face and neck in slow, gentle movements and once applied take 5min to do some gentle yoga or sit quietly focusing on your breath whilst the products absorb into your skin.
After 5 minutes the products will have sunk into the skin and you’re ready to put on your silk eye mask and go to bed. Silk eye masks have also been proven to have numerous benefits – they reduce the likelihood of developing lines around the eyes, they keep skin more hydrated around the eye area and they help improve sleep quality. These normally sell for around £40 (cheapest) so I was very happy to find ESPA included one in this set.
If you suffer with anxiety, low mood or trouble sleeping for whatever reason, I encourage you to try this out for at least 2 nights a week for a month. I can guarantee you will notice an improvement in your sleep quality and if you do this sort of mindful routine every night before bed it will, over time, also aid any anxiety or low mood. I’m not claiming this will cure anything, but it will definitely reduce symptoms and make them more manageable. Also, if you’d like to learn more I recommend the apps Headspace and Calm for guided mindfulness sessions – they’re used by professionals so you know they’re legit.
